The Introduction to Manufacturing program is a joint effort between the Hanover Area School systems, The Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce and the Gettysburg Campus of Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC). Now in its 7th year, the program is a combination of classroom instruction and on-site visits to local manufacturing and business operations.
The students receive five weeks of classroom instruction in modern manufacturing principles and processes, including business planning, forecasting, master scheduling, master resource planning, just-in-time manufacturing and manufacturing economics. This is followed up with week long visits to local firms. The program is concluded at the Annual Chamber Business Breakfast in January, where the students give a presentation to over 150 Hanover business persons.
This year it is being offered as part of the HACC "College in the High School" program, where upon completion, students may receive three credits toward their degree program if they choose to attend HACC after graduation.
This program has been recognized statewide as a recipient of a 2005 Pennsylvania Best Practices award from the Pennsylvania Workforce Development Program and nationally as a 2006 finalist for the prestigious Bellwether Award, given by the Association of Community Colleges Nationwide.
