At AquaPhoenix, we are not afraid of change. Change within an organization is essential to allowing employees to learn new skills, explore new opportunities, and exercise their creativity.  Such changes benefit the overall organization through new ideas and increased commitment. When we decided to conduct a comprehensive review and reorganization of our shipping department, we were excited by the challenge such change presented.

Since our move into our new building in 2016, AquaPhoenix has seen a 26% increase in orders shipped per day. This is a great problem to have, but our shipping department was struggling to keep up. With the use of Lean Manufacturing tools such as Value Stream Mapping and Spaghetti Diagrams we identified several improvement opportunities. Primarily, we found that our process was very batch-oriented as orders were being clustered in our tracking department before moving to shipping. The result was a bottleneck at shipping when large batches were received, putting extreme pressure on our motto that “…anything that can ship today will!”

A cross-functional team consisting of representatives from almost every department in the company began brainstorming ideas to relieve the bottleneck. We believed that we had to incorporate a one-piece flow method, which would mean that each order would be tracked, packed, and shipped in quick succession.  By implementing the one-piece flow methodology, bottlenecks would become immediately evident which would allow our team to quickly respond by flexing our labor where needed. Many meetings, “debates”, revisions, and pots of coffee later we had an agreed upon design and plan. Thanks to excellent teamwork and communication we were able to safely and efficiently rearrange our entire warehouse with zero downtime ensuring our customers never experienced any delays!

Most importantly, many of the great ideas incorporated into the project came, unsurprisingly, from the employees working in the areas affected. By following through on those ideas and keeping everyone engaged throughout the project, our employees have full buy in and ownership for the results which has greatly contributed to the success of the project. This great crew is what makes the difference and is the best team we’ve ever had.

Early metrics show a marked improvement in throughput per labor hour worked in shipping, and we continue to track progress daily. We were able to achieve an increase in capacity of 33% while reducing the overall footprint by 100 square feet.  These improvements mean our customers receive their orders promptly and on time.  It also means that as we grow, our customers can continue to receive the same excellent customer experience they’ve come to expect from AquaPhoenix. As a company, we promise to continue working hard to raise the bar and kick butt for our customers.

On Tuesday, October 22, 2019 students from a local STEAM academy conducted three activities at AquaPhoenix Scientific. The purpose of their visit was to build on what they've been learning regarding the rain cycle and answer questions such as what is in rainwater, how does rain pull CO2 out of the air, and more.

During the first activity, students utilized the Schoolyard Report Card by the Student Action Team of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to grade our facility. They observed rain runoff, a pond, stream, and watershed areas on our property.

The next activity involved testing rainwater samples for pH, conductivity, and hardness. To demonstrate how CO2 gas dissolves in the rain as it falls, students used a straw to blow air into the sample, observing a pH indicator color change.

A visit to AquaPhoenix would not be complete without a tour of the facilities. Students were also able to tour the facilities and learn how AquaPhoenix turns city water into deionized water and visit our in-house Chemistry team in the lab conducting titrations.

It’s not easy walking in these shoes, but it’s fun and it gets the community to talk about something that’s really difficult to talk about: gender relations and men’s sexual violence against women. By wearing women’s shoes, participating, gentlemen symbolically put themselves in the place of women for the purpose of raising awareness about the dire effects of sexual and domestic assault in our community. This year, the brave men of AquaPhoenix strapped on their best high-heels and walked to help raise over $2,300 for our local YWCA. The money raised will support YWCA programs and services for survivors of domestic violence and family assault. This annual fundraiser raises money for the American Cancer Society. This year, our goal was to raise $5,000 as a team and we were able to donate $6,869. Our team walked a grand total of 1,110 laps during the 24 hour relay or 277.5 miles! The community exhibited a huge amount of camaraderie and dedication with the hope of making a difference, however small, to ensure life-saving cancer research gets funded and everyone gets the critical help they need when they need it. Together we were able to raise $217,792.63. To learn more about Relay for Life, visit www.relayforlife.org. We are already looking forward to next year's Relay! A group from AquaPhoenix joined Fisher and volunteered as judges for the event. Awards were given to the top three teams in grades 4-5 and grades 6-8. A total of 49 teams competed in the state finals. Each team of four students was tasked with creating a machine that will move three objects at least six inches across a table. In addition, the teams had to keep a journal of their journey from start to finish, draw up blueprints, inventory pieces, and give a 2-minute presentation to the judges. Middle school students also present their inventory and cost. Judging Criteria:
  • Creativity
  • Teamwork
  • Challenge Success
  • Design
  • Presentation
“Fisher Science Education’s support of this program is a great example of their commitment to promote STEM education in today’s schools.” says Brandon Taylor, Director of Education. The competition certainly was fierce. Of the 1,199 teams who competed, only 49 advanced to the state finals. It is estimated that 1,678,600 pieces of K'Nex were used for this challenge. Congratulations to all of the students who competed! What’s So Cool About Manufacturing?

The 2019 What’s So Cool About Manufacturing? contest for South Central PA is produced by MANTEC and features 21 teams from Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, and York counties. The teams of students and teacher coaches received camera equipment, software, and professional guidance as they learned to script, record, and edit their video stories. The contest’s objective is to change students’ perceptions about manufacturing careers. South Western School District took home the Outstanding Career Pathway award for their video submission featuring AquaPhoenix! Way to go Colts! We were honored to be a featured manufacturer and amazed by what this group of middle schoolers was able to achieve. Be sure to check out https://mantec.org/winners-of-the-coolest-manufacturing-video-contest/ to see all of the winning entries from this event. The result was a bottleneck at shipping when large batches were received, putting extreme pressure on our motto that “…anything that can ship today will!” A cross-functional team consisting of representatives from almost every department in the company began brainstorming ideas to relieve the bottleneck.
