Stormwater
Stormwater is the runoff of water that occurs during storms or snowmelts. In rural areas the stormwater is usually absorbed into the ground, but in urban areas stormwater struggles to permeate concrete and pavement. As a result, this runoff enters gutters, sewers, or natural bodies of water without ever being treated. This can be particularly hazardous to the environment as the runoff will collect contaminants like oil, grease, manure, and even trash as it travels.
Stormwater must be monitored as it can damage property and cause ecological harm to the watershed. Depending on the amount of water involved, it can cause flooding or property damage if not properly channeled to sewers or bodies of water. Runoff can also add increased contamination to the water leading harm to the ecosystem or the need for increased water treatment. Many areas have begun to put ordinances in place to manage stormwater.
