Aquaculture
Aquaculture is the breeding, rearing, and harvest of any water crop, whether it be fish, shellfish, algae, seaweed or other organism. Aquaculture can occur in freshwater, saltwater, or even brackish water. Depending on what is being raised and the area, a different aquaculture system will be used. Some crops are raised in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) that focus on recycling water, others are raised in sequestered areas of open water.
The goal of any Aquaculture operator is to raise a healthy crop as large as it can be for the most profit possible. Water quality is a critical component that determines the crop’s health and growth rate. For some analytes, like dissolved oxygen, being outside of an acceptable range can cause the death of your fish. Other analytes, like pH or alkalinity will cause stress to the crop and stunt its growth if it is outside of acceptable limits and only cause death in extreme situations.
