Common Instruments Used in Water Treatment Applications
Colorimeters – These are used with colorimetric tests to measure the intensity of color in a sample. The color intensity is related to the concentration of the analyte being measured. These are typically portable units.
Spectrophotometers – Measure the amount of light being absorbed by a sample at specified wavelengths. If you know the wavelength of light to use, these can replace colorimeters in some cases. Since colorimetric water tests develop color in relation to the concentration of the analyte they are measuring, spectrophotometers can be used to determine the concentration of contaminants in water. Spectrophotometers are typically benchtop units so they are often used in lab settings.
pH Meter – pH meters come in many sizes, shapes, and with different functions. pH “pens” fit in your hand and can provide fast readings after being held in a sample. Another common type is benchtop meter which is best used for tests where continuous measurements need to be made over time. Many pH meters also measure temperature.
