Alkalinity Test Kits

Alkalinity is a critical parameter in all phases of water chemistry and is a key measurement for a range of industrial processes and water treatment applications.

AquaPhoenix offers alkalinity test kits to fit the needs of each application from high-pressure boiler systems to drinking water. Tell us what your application is, and we will recommend the right test kit for your needs. All our kits come with easy-to-follow photographic instructions to simplify the steps on how to test water alkalinity.

What are Alkalinity Test Kits?

Alkalinity tests measure the levels of carbonate, bicarbonate, and hydroxide alkalinity. It is important to measure the amounts of phenolphthalein “P” alkalinity and total “T” alkalinity to evaluate the scaling potential, corrosivity, or both in water. These parameters are needed to calculate a Langelier or Ryzner index which determines the scaling and corrosion potential of water.

Our EndPoint ID alkalinity test kits feature the standard water testing chemistry of sulfuric or hydrochloric acid, phenolphthalein, and total alkalinity indicator. We also manufacture CHEMetrics Titrets which use a reverse-titration to measure total alkalinity. We also offer specialized kits for hydroxide (OH) alkalinity, burette tests and the Hach digital titrators.

EndPoint ID test kits are packaged in a durable plastic case and include all reagents, equipment and instruction card to complete approximately 60-75 tests. Color coded reagent caps match the color bar on the instruction card for easy identification when running multiple tests and our photographic, step-by-step instructions keep testing simple and help users easily identify color changes.

How Do Alkalinity Test Kits Work

There are three types of alkalinity: hydroxide (OH), carbonate (CO3) and bicarbonate (HCO3).

A key component of water treatment is the prevention of scale forming on heat transfer surfaces. Scale formation is the biggest problem caused by alkalinity and hardness ions. The hydroxide (OH) and carbonate (CO3) ions will react with calcium and magnesium to form calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide scales.

Hydroxide (OH) alkalinity is critical in boiler water for corrosion control and managing scale formation. It can be measured by the calculation 2P-M = OH or directly by adding barium chloride (BaCl) to the sample and titrating to the phenolphthalein endpoint. We offer kits for both methods.

Carbonate and bicarbonate alkalinity are present in all natural waters. Total alkalinity indicator is used to measure the concentration of these anions by titrating with an acid. We offer alkalinity test kits tailored to your specific application.

Every application/system will have differing recommended alkalinity control ranges based on the water quality and how many cycles of concentration are in operation. When selecting your alkalinity test, it’s important to understand your application and test ranges. Give us a call with your requirements and we will recommend the kit best suited for your application.

What is Included in the Alkalinity Test Kit?

Our most common alkalinity test kit includes these reagents:

  • SA1595-B, Alkalinity Titrant High (Sulfuric Acid 0.6N), 60 mL
  • AI6925-A, Total Alkalinity Indicator, 30 mL
  • PH1605-A, Phenolphthalein Indicator, 30 mL
  • SA1555-B, Alkalinity Titrant Low, 60 mL

Alkalinity test kits are available for P, M, T and OH alkalinity. Each EndPoint ID test kit is packaged in a durable, plastic case to protect the contents. Reagent bottles are stored vertically to minimize leaks and each kit includes all necessary equipment, reagents and an instruction card and can run approximately 60 to 75 tests.

Common Uses for Alkalinity Test Kits

Industrial workers may need to know how to test for alkalinity for multiple applications, including:

  • Drinking water: Test kits can be used to evaluate the alkalinity of drinking water and check that it is safe for consumption.
  • Boiler Systems: Boilers operate with specific control ranges for alkalinity to prevent corrosion within heating and steam generation processes and to prevent scale deposition.
  • Cooling Towers: Monitoring alkalinity is a key factor in preventing scale formation and controlling corrosion based on the Langelier or Ryznar index.
  • Wastewater: Various wastewater treatment processes require accurate measurement of the water’s alkalinity.
  • Aquaculture: Alkalinity may be a key metric to test regularly when managing conditions in aquaculture.
  • Pools: Pools need to maintain the proper alkalinity to stay safe for swimmers, and test kits can be a valuable tool for measurement.
  • Soil irrigation: Water alkalinity tests may be necessary to create the right conditions for soil irrigation.
